new reading
On Friday, I attended the SCBWI Conference in Los Angeles.
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the entire weekend, but I did hear some amazing speakers on Friday, and I came away with a new list of recommended reading for children’s books. One picture book title that I could not forget, and had to read right away was, We Don’t Eat Our Classmates (Higgins 2018). I love this story about a little dinosaur’s first day of school. The day didn’t get off to a good start when Penelope tried to eat her classmates. Her appetite prevented her from making friends with the human children, but she soon learns that it is not so fun to be the object of someone else’s craving when a goldfish bites her finger. Eventually, Penelope finds her place among the other kids. I love the illustrations of the children with Penelope’s saliva dripping from them, and the description of her school lunch, 300 tuna sandwiches but just “one” boxed apple juice. This was a fun read!
